Chapter 8

“Did you tell her where you’d be?”

“I said I was going out to lunch and if she wanted to talk to me, I’ll speak to her after closing.” Celia tossed her purse aside. “I’m not telling her where I am. And she certainly doesn’t know who I’m with.”

“I see.” Brady sipped at his water bottle. “You are that ashamed of me?”

“God, of course not!” Celia reached out and squeezed his hand. “I’m not ashamed. But it’s none of her business. She’s not my keeper, so I don’t have to answer to her.”

Brady sighed.

“I’m surprised your mother hasn’t told her about us.”

“If she has, Dev hasn’t said anything.”

“I suspect she has. It might explain why Dev is actively seeking me out and flirting with me.”

“What?” Celia’s eyes widened. “You weren’t going to tell me?”

“How do you expect me to tell you? Besides, I just walk away. We’re in public places when she does that, and I’m not having a scene.”

Celia snorted.

“You’ll have her at your apartment soon if you’re not careful.”

“She’s not getting in without the alarm screeching its head off, and Dev hasn’t got a key. She knows after the last time she turned up uninvited to a Christmas gathering that she’s not welcome.”

At least Dev had paid attention to that. She hadn’t made an attempt to come to his condo. Yet….! Brady had a feeling she would start doing that at some point if she ramped up her attempts to get his attention.

“I remember you telling me about that.” Celia frowned. “Maybe you should be a bit firmer with her. And perhaps make a complaint to her company that she’s harassing you. Businesses tend to look unfavorably at that, no matter the gender.”

“I might just do that.”

Brady knew he should have done that years ago, but he didn’t want to get Dev into serious trouble. Even with his frustration over her flirtations, his flaw for keeping everyone happy got in the way. Celia had pointed out that he was going to need to make someone upset if it made him happy because he was putting his happiness last.

Brady was beginning to see that she was right.

“I’ve heard of stubbornness,” He screwed the lid tight on his bottle and put it aside before reaching for one of Marcy’s brownies. “But when it goes beyond stubborn into delusional...that’s a turn-off. She deserves to have someone in her life who loves her, not spend her life moping around after me.”

“Then you’re going to have to tell her straight.” Celia wrinkled her nose. “I don’t see her as a threat, but when I date someone I date just one person, not their stalker.”

“This is your friend you’re talking about.”

“And I’m beginning to rethink that, especially with the way she’s acting.” Celia sighed and picked up another strawberry. “Mom and Dev were discussing you the night you asked me out. Dev was gushing over you yet again, and Cynthia said you and she should get together.”

“Of course she would.” Brady grunted. “As long as I’m not directly associated with her family.
